Writing is funny. Sometimes when I set out to tell a story, it comes out exactly as I expect. Other times, writing is a bit like a dowser with a divining rod. You know something is out there, but you’re not exactly sure where or what.
Last week I was asked by an online magazine called Open Thought Vortex to write a “Spooky Campfire Tale” for their October edition. Normally I just write, I don’t take requests, but the publisher of this magazine has been a strong supporter of my writing so I figured, “what the heck.”
Also, I don’t really do “spooky,” but I was pretty sure I could come up with a campfire tale. I mused on the topic for a few hours and something from my early youth came to mind and I just started writing.
Had I known where it was going to take me, I would certainly have done more to prepare. You’ll see what I mean in a minute.
In the end, it is a piece I am very proud of, and one which brought me back to parts of my childhood I haven’t explored for years (if ever actually).
So, here is the link to The Last Campfire on Open Thought Vortex. Enjoy!
